CULTURAL POLICY / PROMOTION of CULTURE
The goal of the "Cultural Policy" course is to develop and to improve the ability of students for strategic perception of the developing Ukrainian culture, to introduce them into the general dynamics of the development of arts in the global international perspective. The course is helpful for better perception of the national and international contexts for cultural projects implementation, and for better understanding of peculiarities for the development and promotion of culture on the local, national and international levels. It also offers an opportunity to analyze various models and approaches to the cultural processes management in Europe and in the world.
The course is helpful for better understanding, how the state influences the development of art and the process of determining cultural policy, what opportunities for the support of art exist in Ukraine, what the official national priorities are as to the development of culture, etc. Besides, the students get a possibility to examine the social perspective of culture and to understand the connection and mutual influences between cultural, social, educational, and economic transformations of a society. This will be helpful for the cultural managers in identifying themselves in Ukrainian and world contexts.
As the cultural and art traditions of Ukrainian regions are quite specific, the understanding of the regional peculiarities of cultural policy development is very important for Ukrainian managers. The nowadays situation reflects quite a low level of collaboration between art institutions of different regions of Ukraine, which significantly limits the opportunities for their development and for the general promotion of Ukrainian culture on the international level. Being the basis for successful collaboration between art institutions, the knowledge of the regional peculiarities has to improve the general effectiveness of their work.
The "Cultural Policy" course educates students with the specifics of culture and art in Ukraine in the context of European culture and traditions. One of its parts introduces the basic principles of the European Union cultural policy, which is important for preparing Ukraine for being the part of the Europe. The understanding of the international context will be helpful for Ukrainian managers in conducting effective promotion of their organizations and art projects, in finding contacts and developing mutual understanding with their European colleagues. This creates opportunities for successful collaboration of managers from different countries, developing joint art and cultural projects, which consequently helps to improve the quality of work of Ukrainian cultural institutions and furthers the promotion of the Ukrainian culture in general.
ECONOMICS FOR NON-PROFIT ART AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS
The goal of the course "Economics for non-profit art and cultural organizations" is to provide the students with the knowledge of economical aspects of functioning of non profit cultural institutions (both State and community), and to help them to develop practical skills in economic planning, budget spending, basic accounting, and effective operating with State-budget and/or privately granted funds.
The course illustrates such issues as: economic planning for non-profit cultural institutions, financing of their activities and events, pricing policies for services provided, legal aspects of economical activities of cultural and art institutions, etc. By attending the course the Ukrainian managers gain practical skills in economic management in the current social and economic conditions.
MANAGEMENT OF INSTITUTIONS IN THE SPHERE OF CULTURE
The goal of the course "Management of Cultural Institutions" is to teach students with the general principles of organizational management in general and the management of cultural institutions in particular, to provide them with the knowledge of the main stages and components of the managing process, and to improve and develop their practical management skills.
The course will not be focused on the management peculiarities of some specific art projects or cultural institutions (such as museums), as this will be the goal of other specifically developed courses. Instead, it will make emphasis on the general principles and overview of the managing process in order to provide the students with the understanding of historical and cultural aspects of management, the influence of social, political and economical society transformations on the process of institutional management, and to help them to consider Ukrainian context for cultural organizations management.
The course "Management of Cultural Institutions" introduces the effective methods of institutional management in the sphere of culture, the mechanisms and existing opportunities for the development of cultural entrepreneurship. This information and relevant skills should be helpful for both commercial and non profit cultural and art institutions.
STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT IN ARTS AND CULTURE
The goal of the course "Strategic Management in Arts and Culture" is to develop strategic thinking and the ability to see long term perspectives and vision of the organization in future. The strategic vision of the organizational development helps to better identify concrete and precise goals for current activities of an organization, to determine the priority directions of its development, and to use the vision of expected results in the planning of its day to day work. The strategic vision of an organization becomes the basis for result oriented management approach.
Within this course the art and cultural managers gain systematic knowledge about the theory of planning, contemporary approaches to developing and implementing plans, and improve their knowledge of the current situation and main directions of strategic planning for cultural institutions.
The course helps cultural managers to identify and fix the mission and vision of their organization, its strategic goals and directions of development. It provides the students with the knowledge and practical skills in analysis of their internal and external resources, competitive strength of their organizations, analysis of opportunities and threats, and the development of strategic plan and concrete tasks for its realization.
PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT IN ARTS AND CULTURE
The goal of the course "Personnel Management in Arts and Culture" is to provide students with the information on modern approaches and directions of personnel management in art and cultural institutions, methods and approaches of effective management models design, and also to develop their skills for analysis of challenges and effective problems solving.
Personnel management is one of the most important tasks of a manager, especially in the art and cultural environment, where every staff member is a bright personality and a creative person. Combination of these personalities for building a good team is a first hand task for a manager ensuring the effective performance of strategic goals by an organization.
An important aspect of the personnel management is the motivation of employees: it has certain peculiarities in the cultural field associated with the personality types of artistic people. A great attention is paid to treating a collective of artistic/cultural people as a team of like-minded persons, where everyone plays his/her own role.
The course also includes such aspects as prevention and solving of conflicts arising at a cultural institution or in an artistic team working on a concrete creative project. The students learn more about the conflict causes, ways of solution by mediation or other communication techniques.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: FUNDRAISING AND SPONSORING
The goal of the course "Financial Management" is to teach the students with the basics of managing finances, including financial planning and reporting, and to develop their skills in designing and conducting effective fundraising campaigns for cultural and art projects and institutions, and the skills of working with sponsors.
Financial management is an important component of general activity planning for cultural and art organizations. Thus, knowledge of basic principles of composing annual and strategic budgets of an organization, making budgets for concrete projects and events, conducting financial monitoring, correcting financial plans and other related topics is very useful and important for these managers. The students will also gain information on general principles of accounting and reporting, taxation policies for non profit institutions and businesses acting in the art and cultural fields.
The effectiveness of fundraising and financial management is one of the key factors of successful work of cultural institutions and art projects and one of the most important causes of their sustainability. Social and political reformations cause step by step denationalization of cultural institutions and their separation from the State. This limits the possibilities to finance their activities with State-budget money, and cultural institutions have to conduct their own economic activity and raise money for their projects and events. Thus, the ability of cultural managers to develop good partner relations with businesses and further collaboration with non governmental domestic and various international foundations is very important for them. The part of the "Financial Management" course will be dedicated to these issues.
The background of successful work and sustainability of public organizations working in the field of culture is: their art of effective work with community, helping them to raise the local funds for their events. The art of fundraising - finding financial resources for the implementation of non commercial cultural projects - is one of the basic topics of the "Financial management" course.
MARKETING IN ARTS AND CULTURE
The course "Marketing in Arts and Culture" improves the cultural managers' knowledge in marketing, develops their skills in analyzing marketing opportunities of their organizations, teaches them to use and increase these opportunities, and to consider marketing as a tool to improve financial situation of cultural institutions.
The course introduces marketing as a system of management activity, which helps cultural and art institutions to determine their proper place in the social environment and to consider the current economic situation. It includes such issues as: the evolution of marketing concepts, the development of non-commercial marketing, peculiarities of marketing strategies for cultural institutions, etc.
While attending the training, the students gain practical skills in developing marketing plans, designing and conducting marketing research, analysis of cultural and art market and its actual needs, and organizing the work of marketing departments at cultural institutions.
PUBLIC RELATIONS, COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA MANAGEMENT
The goal of the course "Public Relations, Communication and Media Management" is to provide the students with the basic knowledge on the theory of mass communications, studying basic principles of public relations, peculiarities of effective PR for cultural and art institutions. The students also gain information and concrete practical skills in promoting the activity of their cultural institutions through media.
Ensuring the publicity of work of cultural and art institutions is the key factor of a general strategy of their activities and the basis for their effective relations with public. The quality of publicity determines the positive social/community attitudes to their work, ensures public trust, and consequently, develops people's willingness to support the activity of cultural and art institutions and to take personal part in it.
The important component of the course is providing students with practical suggestions and skills in developing PR strategy, composing annual and current PR plans, developing their practical skills in organizing press conferences, media briefings, conducting media monitoring, preparing press releases, press announcements, etc.
MANAGEMENT OF CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS
The goal of the course "Management of Cultural Institutions" is to provide the students with the information on the contemporary perspective and basic development directions of the management specifics in different spheres of culture. The course gives the basic knowledge on the general theory of management along with the peculiarities of management of different spheres of art and culture and develops students' skills in practical management, including planning based on the analysis of current situation.
The course introduces the management peculiarities of different arts spheres, show business, and radio and TV companies/industries. During the training based on case study approach the students will study concrete examples/situations associated with the work of museums, galleries, theaters, orchestras, and other cultural and art institutions. They will analyze the concrete managing situations specifically related to the concrete cultural institutions, study their organizational structure and social functions.
Along with the determining of the peculiarities of different cultural spheres, the students will study the similar approaches to their management, which will be helpful in identifying the place of every art institution in the national cultural environment of Ukraine. It will also help to discover the perspectives of collaboration between the institutions representing different fields of culture.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT IN ARTS AND CULTURE
The goal of the course "Project Management in Arts and Culture" is to provide the students with the knowledge and practical skills of art and cultural projects design and management. Its materials have been developed based on the current economic and social conditions and realities.
The students will learn about the entire process of cultural and art projects management: project planning, developing and design, composing a budget based on project tasks, selection of project staff, developing a monitoring plan, actual project realization, final evaluation and reporting.
The knowledge and skills gained from this course should be useful for both independent artists and managers of various cultural and art institutions. The course develops the students' ability to use result oriented management approaches. Starting with the planning stage of a project, they learn more on how to estimate its impact on the community, concrete sphere or the society in general.
This course also includes other topics connected with the project management, such as public relations, fundraising, personnel management, etc.
LEGAL AND ETHICAL ASPECTS OF CULTURAL WORK
The course "Legal and ethical aspects of cultural work" is dedicated to the legal foundations for every economic and public activity in the field of arts and culture, and also its moral and ethical aspects.
The knowledge of domestic and international legislation, the understanding of the existing limitations and possibilities created by the state for cultural and art institutions and projects are the key factors of effective usage of their potentials and the guarantee of their existence in the legal space.
The course includes the studying of the basic legal norms, acts, laws, codes and other documents related to the cultural and art fields. The students practice case studies and analyze concrete examples of legal cases from the work of acting cultural managers.
One of the main topics of the course "Legal and ethical aspects of cultural work" is the intellectual property rights and associated civic regulations. The students become familiar with the modern Ukrainian and international legislation, learn how to conclude agreements with artists and performers, learn more about their rights on intellectual property for art works.
INTERNATIONAL/INTERCULTURAL RELATIONSHIPS IN ARTS AND CULTURE
The course "International/intercultural relationships in arts and culture" educates the students with the dynamics of the cultural development in different parts of the World, state policy of cultural support, existing international associations and other organizations uniting cultural managers and artists, international foundations and other institutions supporting the development of worldwide art and cultural exchange initiatives.
Besides the knowledge of peculiarities of different arts and cultures in the world, the students gain useful contacts with their colleagues, and start to think about the possible perspectives for collaboration and developing joint cultural and art projects. This should create additional possibilities for cultural exchange programs and internships.
The information on the work of international foundations, supporting arts and culture in Ukraine, would be useful for the most of artists and managers, as it creates additional opportunities for fundraising and discovering other resources for the development of the cultural institutions work and the improvement of the managers' qualifications.
ARTS AND CULTURE STUDIES
The "Arts and Culture Studies" course provided the students with the introduction into the theory and history of culture and art. Its main goal is to develop the ability of students to perceive and to estimate culture and cultures, art and arts, their "languages", developments, creations, and also to identify the role of management in cultural and art processes. The course is also a significant tool for students in determining the peculiarities of cultural and art spheres of human activity and recognizing its management specifics.
The main features of the course include its practical orientation and personality oriented nature; refer to the concrete art works and creations of culture, usage of audio visual equipment, visits to various art events, etc. The course would be helpful for the student-managers in determining their own picture of culture and arts and identifying their own position/place in this field.
